Sun Care Protection Tips

What’s a world without sunshine?

Sunlight brightens our moods, lifts our spirits and provides us with essential vitamin D.

It’s important to get out there and enjoy a sunny day. However, as with everything in life, moderation is key. Many so-called signs of aging are in fact the result of overexposure to the sun. Therefore, it’s important to limit long-term exposure and to protect your skin from potentially harmful UVA and UVB rays with a natural, gentle and effective sunscreen.

Is Your Sunscreen Toxic?

Here is a list of some unsafe, toxic chemicals used in sunscreens

  • Para amino benzoic acid
  • Octyl salicyclate
  • Oxybenzone
  • Cinoxate
  • Dioxybenzone
  • Phenylbenzimidazole
  • Homosalate
  • Menthyl anthranilate
  • Octocrylene
  • Methoxycinnamate
  • Parabens

When possible, stay away from these chemicals and use natural sunscreens.

Natural minerals such as titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide block potentially harmful rays without irritating or penetrating the skin. These sun-reflecting minerals offer immediate protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Here are a few good sunscreens to choose from as listed on an older post from foodbabe.com:

Here is a list of some great foods and supplements to protect your skin:

  • Resveratrol (red wine, blueberries and red grapes)
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (salmon and fish oil)
  • Astaxanthin (salmon and fish oil)
  • Catechins (green and white tea)
  • Vitamin E (pumpkin seeds, almonds, and asparagus)
  • Beta-carotene (carrots and red bell peppers)

Some Sun Care Protection Safety Tips:

  •  It’s ok to get 20+ minutes of sunshine daily, especially early morning and late afternoon
  •  Cover up with light clothing before you get burnt
  • Wear a hat for protection
  •  Wear natural sunscreen if you are going to stay out for a long period of time
  •  Eat a diet high in anti-oxidants to protect your skin
  •  If you get burnt, you can try using a mixture of aloe, coconut oil and vitamin E on your skin

I hope this post helps you to enjoy your summer activities without worrying about your skin as much.
